Romain Bechu wins ahead of his countrymen

Strong performance by the professionals from France at the Open Tazegzout: at the penultimate tournament in the Pro Golf Tour 2018 Moroccan series Romain Bechu secured the winner’s trophy and 2nd and 3rd places went to his countrymen Stanislas Gautier and Franck Daux. With 8 under par (68, 71, 69) after 54 holes, Bechu was one stroke ahead of Gautier (69, 75, 65) who achieved the best round of the entire tournament week on the final day on the Taghazout Bay course. Fabian Becker was the best German sharing 4th place with the Scotsman Christopher Maclean and Mateusz Gradecki from Poland.
Taghazout Bay/Morocco – When it comes to sensational trick shots, Romain Bechu has already enjoyed an international reputation for quite some time – the Frenchman has already been booked by the European Tour for show appearances. Now the man from Versailles has once again proved that he can also play outstanding tournament golf and in fact masters the whole repertoire of golf strokes superbly. The 32-year old displayed a consistently high standard of golf over three days on the just as picturesque as challenging Taghazout Bay Resort golf course in Morocco. “This golf course is really exceptional and excellent quality,” says Bechu. “I am incredibly happy that I was able to win here of all places.” The course’s varied layout combined with the large, very fast and sometimes heavily undulating greens called for major accuracy with all strokes. “On this course it is crucial to play very accurately and take well-considered strokes,” says the winner. “Fortunately, I managed to do that well this week.”
The German Fabian Becker had led the competition on the first two days of the tournament; after rounds of 67 and 69 strokes the professional from Lohfelden went into the final round with eight under par and a three point lead on Romain Bechu and Oliv Rozner, another Frenchman. But the bonus was already forfeited on the first hole when Becker played a double bogey and Bechu played a birdie. The later winner followed with another birdie on the 3rd fairway and an eagle at the 5th hole and overtook the lead early. He finally completed his second win on the Pro Golf Tour perfectly with a strong birdie on the 16th; Bechu had won the Augsburg Open in 2015.
The last Pro Golf Tour tournament in Morocco is on the agenda from 4 to 6 April with the Open Golf Royal Anfa Mohammedia. The battle is on for EUR 30,000 prize money again and it will also be decided who wins the special “Race to Rabat” ranking: the best player in the six 2018 Moroccan tournaments receives a wild card for the Trophée Hassan II, a European Tour tournament endowed with EUR 2.5 million, which is being held from 19 to 22 April in Rabat.
