Playoff win for amateur Robert Foley in Austria
Raiffeisen Pro Golf Tour St. Pölten
With rounds of 64, 65 and 66 strokes they had walked in step over the course of St. Pölten Golf Club in Austria at the Raiffeisen Pro Golf Tour St. Pölten 2021, were tied at 15 under par after 54 holes and had a wonderful battle on the final day of the tournament. On the second extra hole of the playoff, Swiss amateur Robert Foley then decided the tournament in his favour when he prevailed over his German opponent Maximilian Oelfke with a par on hole 18.
St. Pölten/Austria - "This tournament deserved two winners today!" said Robert Foley when he accepted the trophy of the Pro Golf Tour classic in St. Pölten. "We had an absolutely thrilling duel at a very high level throughout the day, and Max would have deserved the victory at least as much as I did," said the 24-year-old Swiss. The fact that it was not enough for the German to win for the first time on the Pro Golf Tour was basically due to his first mistake after three days of excellent tournament golf, in which he had previously only recorded one bogey.
Both had managed the first extra hole of the play-off with a par, but then Maximilian Oelfke missed his fifth tee shot of the tournament week on hole 18, a par 5 of only 434 metres, left into the woods. The ball landed out-of-bounds and the way to the first Pro Golf Tour title was paved for the faultless Foley.
He was delighted with his good short game, the strong performance on the par-70 course of St. Pölten Golf Club, and the tournament victory with which he crowns his outstanding 2021 season. He had already finished second at the NewGiza Pyramids Challenge in Egypt in May, and after playing four tournaments, the man from Lausanne is now ranked fourth in the Pro Golf Tour Order of Merit.
Turning professional now
"It's really going fantastically for me this year, I've also played very well in the amateur tournaments. I don't think there's really a better time than now, with this win in a professional tournament, to turn professional myself," Foley said.
This would mean that in the future he will not only be able to collect ranking points but also prize money; the next opportunity to do so will be at the Wolf Open 2021, which is scheduled from 7 to 9 August at the Golfanlage Holledau in Germany. Another 30,000 euros and ranking points will be at stake on the Holledau course - and a 61: that is the course record set by local hero Lee Spencer in 2005, the last time the Pro Golf Tour was a guest in the Hallertau. And of course the Pro Golf Tour players want to break it in 2021.
