Michael Hirmer wins the seasons' first tournament

Red Sea Egyptian Classic 2018

Mild temperatures, greens in perfect condition, fantastic golf: At the Red Sea Egyptian Classic 2018, the Pro Golf started the fourth time in a row into the new season on the course of the Sokhna Golf Club. German amateur Michael Hirmer secured himself the victory with a total nine under par. After three rounds Hirmer finished with 207 strokes (70, 67, 70), two strokes less than Scotsman Liam Johnston (70, 69, 70).

Ain Sokhna/Egypt – „It feels great, I’m more than happy about this victory“, Michael Hirmer said at the prize giving ceremony. It was a deserved victory for the Bavarian amateur: Few players could score as contantly as Hirmer did on the demanding course close to the Red Sea. After the first 18 holes of the tournament the 20-year-old held the shared seventh rank, but a 67 on day 2 made him climb the top of the leaderboard. He shared the pole position with Polish porfessional Mateusz Gradecki, each with 7 under par. But while Gradecki fell back during the final round, Hirmer played -2 and secured himself the first trophy of the year.

That trophy is a special one for the German: „I had a little carreer-low last season, but than I changed my preparation for 2018 and did a lot of intense weight training, which helped me to hit longer. Besides that it’s the first time I’ve won a tournament on a professional tour. I’m very proud I was able to succeed against such a strong and competitive field.“

Second rank goes to Scotsman Liam Johnston with a total seven under par. The 24-year-old debuted on the Pro Golf Tour in Egypt after he earned his category last October by winning the Q-School. The third place is shared by Swiss Luca Galliano and fellow-countryman Mathias Eggenberger, each scored five under.

The Red Sea Egyptian Classic was the first out of two events the Pro Golf Tour hosts at the magnificent Sokhna Golf Club. While the players used the A and B courses in the last few days, the participants of the Red Sea Ain Sokhna Classic will play on a combination of B and C. The tournament will take place from January 22 to 24. The 102 players in the field will fight for 30.000 Euros prize money and also as much points for the Order of Merit
