Ain Suchna, Egypt – Martin Obtmeier achieves his first victory on the Pro Golf Tour at the Red Sea Ain Sokhna Open 2025. With a spectacular birdie on the third extra hole of the play-off at Sokhna Golf Club, the German beat Ronan Kleu (Switzerland) in a dra-matic title race. Nathan Cossement (Belgium) finished in third place ahead of Yannick Schütz (Germany).

Third tournament, third German victory: it was a day that Martin Obtmeier will not forget in a hurry. The top talent started the final round of the tournament on the Red Sea four strokes behind the leader Kleu. 18 holes and 64 strokes (-8) later, it was clear that the 20-year-old from Straubing was heading into the final round thanks to the best round of the day. In the play-off, the Bavarian celebrated his title premiere on the Pro Golf Tour thanks to a dream shot.

When the last groups reached the back nine, there was still no clear favourite to win. At this point, 15 players were a maximum of four strokes behind the top position. However, two players, Kleu and Obtmeier, managed to pull away from the competition late on.

Kleu struggles at the start, Obtmeier shines
The day began with four bogeys on the first six holes for the Swiss Kleu, who had start-ed the final round from the top position. The silver medallist of the 2023 Amateur Cham-pionship was able to limit the major damage with an eagle on hole 3. Then the turning point: With six birdies in the further course, including four in a row from holes 14 to 17, he actually managed to draw level with Obtmeier.

A play-off had to decide the outcome and it took until the 57th hole before the winner of the trophy was decided. After two pars each time, the 18th hole (par 4) had to be played again. Obtmeier missed the fairway for the first time, but then put his wedge from just under 110 metres just a few centimetres from the hole with a good amount of backspin. Kleu missed his birdie putt and Obtmeier only had to tap in to win.

‘I had a bit of luck in the play-off’
‘I'm just happy that it worked out today,’ commented the title debutant. ‘This victory makes me very happy. Above all, it's proof that my coaches and I worked on the right things during the winter. I was a bit lucky in the play-off that Ronan missed the putts. He had a much better chance on the first two holes. The wedge shot for the decisive birdie was fun. I was in the rough and was speculating on an easy pull. Fortunately, that turned out to be the case. The ball landed a few metres behind the flag and came back.’

The well-maintained course at Sokhna Golf Club was no stranger to Obtmeier and Co. The top address on the Red Sea with a total of 27 holes has been an integral part of the Pro Golf Tour's tournament calendar for many years and is one of the most popular stops. ‘The course is very beautiful and excellently maintained,’ said Obtmeier. ‘The greens have become even better. The feel-good factor is also high in other respects. I'm here for the fourth year now and it feels a bit like being on holiday.’

After the first three tournaments of the season in Turkey and Egypt, five Germans and one Swiss occupy the top five places in the Order of Merit: Martin Obtmeier (1), Michael Hirmer (2), Carl Siemens (3), Philipp Katich (4), Philipp Macionga and Ronan Kleu (5).

In two days' time, the aces of the Pro Golf Tour will once again get down to business at Sokhna Golf Club. The Red Sea Egyptian Classic 2025 is on the schedule from Sunday.
