Cairo/Egypt –The third tournament of the Pro Golf Tour season also remained exciting until the last putt - a nerve-racking final in which the Frenchman Victor Veyret was able to prevail in the end despite a missed birdie putt on the 18th hole. "My hands are still shaking," said the winner moments after the decision. "It's very difficult to win a tournament. I made a lot of mistakes today, but of course I'm happy to have taken the win anyway." Veyret entered the final day of the Allegria Open as one of the leaders, but slipped from the top spot after two bogeys on holes 2 and 4.

"I missed a few short putts at the beginning," the 25-year-old explained. Already at the first tournament of the season, the Dreamland Pyramids Classic, Veyret was in the final group - also then, as on this Sunday, the Belgian Alan de Bondt was part of the direct competition. "It was the second time I competed with Alan for a title. He's a good friend of mine and it's fun to play with him." De Bondt - the lucky winner in the opening event - missed a short birdie putt on 18 this time and with it the opportunity to force Veyret into a play-off.

Veyret stayed positive

Decisive for Veyret's victory was his mental strength after the initial weak phase. "I had a lot of stress at the beginning, but I managed to stay positive and then the putts finally fell." The Club de Chantily man made three birdies on the back nine of the Allegria Golf Course - a course that impressed Veyret. "I love the course. It is one of the best in Egypt. The design is great and you need a good strategy." These words come from an Egypt expert: Veyret had already won the Red Sea Egyptian Classic in this country during his rookie season in 2020.

Leaderboard: All results at a glance

The triumph of the son of a pair of golf-mad parents did not really come as a surprise. Veyret already convinced with good performances in his first two starts this season. Two top ten results preceded his second title on the Pro Golf Tour. Results that Veyret had worked hard for in the winter. "I have a new coach who has taught me to swing more freely. I've internalised that feeling of freedom now and now I'm trying to repeat that movement." The new approach helps him especially with his long game, which was the key to success at the Allegria Open. So some short putts can be missed - and he still wins the title.

Behind Veyret, four players shared second place. Besides de Bondt, Lars Buijs (Belgium), Michael Hirmer (Germany) and Trystan Perkins (England) finished the tournament at -6. The next event is the Red Sea Ain Sokhna Classic from 12 to 14 April.
