German Philipp Mejow wins after playoff in Egypt
Red Sea Ain Sokhna Classic
With a birdie on the third extra hole Philipp Mejow from Berlin secured himsef victory of the Red Sea Ain Sokhna Classic. After 54 holes he had shared 1st place with his fellow contrymen Hinrich Arkenau and Benedict Staben.
Ain Sokhna/Egypt — A three men playoff decided about the victor of the Red Sea Ain Sokhna Classic. In the first round Finn Teemu Bakker had taken the lead with a brilliant round 66, and when the tournament was close to it's end on day three it looked more than likely that Dutchman Reinier Saxton would celebrate his second win when he birdied 17 and just needed a par to be at least leader in the clubhouse. But with a double bogey on the final hole the man from Amsterdam set himself back to -6 and tied 4th position with Bakker and Germany Stephan Wolters and Daniel Wünsche.
With -7 Philipp Mejow from Berlin, Hinrich Arkenau (Lohne) and Benedict Staben (Hamburg) were tied for the lead and so it was clear it would be a German win this time. After they all played par on the first and second extra hole with Mejow missing a 5 foot putt on his second attempt, it was Mejow who finally made a birdie when they played hole 18 for the fourth time on this day and got rewarded with the trophy and the 5000 euro cheque.
For the 26 year old it is his second win on the Pro Golf Tour after the Sirene Classic in Turkey in 2013. "I had a very good preparation for this season", Mejow said, "and I was very confident when I came here." With this confidence and strong putting he played rounds of 71, 67 and 71 in Egypt, reached the playoff and is now one big step closer to his goal for 2015: a ticket for the 2016 European Challenge Tour.
Next chance to collect some more of the oligatory ranking list points: The Open Samanah that will take place in Morocco 1st to 3rd February.
